I want my money and time back. This was so horrible, I couldn’t believe that this book was written by DBF. I don’t care who you are or think you are, a self-proclaimed “Southern Lady” DOES NOT ridicule their own grandchild because she doesn’t like the child’s mother. Who does that? And than telling a 13 year old that she’s an ass for defending her own mother. There’s nothing redeeming, charming or likable about this hideous family. I’m from Charleston and was appalled at their behavior. This is not a Southern family at all! One scene in this book stood out in my mind vividly and since I've read every book published by Dorothea Benton Frank, it's hard for me to believe that the use of the word "arcane" in a discussion between Richard and Caroline such as the discussion on their wedding night. Richard tells his new wife that the vow "of the wife obeying her husband was arcane". I had trouble understanding what he disagreed with regarding this vow (personally I also disagree with the inclusion of this vow in a wedding ceremony but it's because I don't think a wife is a husband's property or under his supervision because a female is unable to make rational decisions of her own about something in regards to herself or even something that involves both of them as a couple. Most of the 20th century and currently all of the 21st century views marriage as an equal partnership). Richard saying he finds this vow to be arcane confused me. Perhaps the Author meant to say archaic which would, by definition, make sense. Arcane and archaic have two separate and unrelated definitions. I may be nitpicking but the correct use of words should be a major priority to a writer or storyteller, which this Author definitely IS in my opinion..still even with that blip....I'd recommend this book!
